POWER

WAPIC – the only event for the West African power sector comes to Lagos, Nigeria for 3 days from 12 to 14 November 2012.

Power generation and access to gas must be discussed. David Ige, the Gas Master plan lead in Nigeria for NNPC, is invited to present a paper next year as well as Mahama Kappiah from ECREEE. They could share the renewable energy potential and projects in the West African region.

By the time WAPIC comes around next year, the Nigeria power sector assets should have all been sold and the names of the new company owners will be available. These are the companies that will be our new delegate audience and speakers, depending on what they are doing, and they will be showcasing any successes they have.

Since WAPIC is moving to Lagos, Babatunde Fashinola, Governor of Lagos State, is one of the recommended speakers for 2012 programme as we are planning a Large Power/Water Users conference co-located with WAPIC.

Access to finance and developing the investment environment is a must for the main conference and pre-conference day. This was the most well attended pre-conference day and remains the major bottleneck in the development of the industry. IFC, World Bank and all the multilateral donors would be great to get on board for this session. This continues the dialogue between the financiers, policy makers and utility/project developers to increase cash flow into the sector.

Tariffs was a huge topic as well and government concessions around PPAs. This was in the 2011 original programme to be covered by NERC but the speaker could not make it. The topic will be covered in 2012.

What will you gain by attending WAPIC 2012?

  • Meet with all the key stakeholders in the West African power sector
  • Experience three days of a balanced programme of topics encompassing challenges in generation, transmission and distribution
  • Listen to experts share their insights into the potential for renewable energy in the West African region
  • Receive an update on the power sector privatisation process and the challenges and successes experienced in Nigeria
  • Gain an understanding of the steps required to improve utility performance from loss reductions to network distribution development and increased electrification rates
  • Hear from multilateral donors on what projects are bankable and the criteria for attracting finance
  • Discuss the challenges that Nigeria is facing in developing its regulatory and legal framework to increase investor confidence and security
  • Evaluate power sector investment opportunities
  • Roam the exhibition floor and network with expert consultants and service providers keen to support the growth of the West African power sector

With such an exciting line-up of events, can you afford to miss it?

Nigeria’s current electricity power output is about 4,000 Megawatts. To bring electricity power to its 150 million people, Nigeria has plans to expand electricity output to 14,000 MW by 2013 and 40,000 MW by 2020. This will need $3.5bn per annum for the next 10 years.

Attend WAPIC 2012 to get an update on their electricity power reform and the challenges Nigeria are experiencing with their power sector goals!
